As the Australian Standard Garratts were built as a wartime measure they were initially owned by the Commonwealth Land Transport Board and provided to the various railways on loan or lease, so carried these CLTB plates and were numbered in a single sequence from G1 to G65, irrespective of where in the country they were stationed. Later the locomotives were often on sold, and in some cases renumbered by their new owners (notably the South Australian Railways and the Emu Bay Railway), although the TGR retain the original, numbers scattered between G6 and G62
