This list was originally compiled by Michael Dix and Andrew Dix, and published in their 1991 book Locomotives of the Tasmanian Transport Museum.
This list includes all classes of steam locomotive operated by the Tasmanian Government Railways (TGR). Note that in the case of the ex TMLR (Tasmanian Main Line Railway Company) and ex L&WR (Launceston and Western Railway) locos, only those surviving and being reclassed by the TGR have been included (These two private railways were taken over by the TGR in 1890 and 1872 respectively, and many locomotives were quickly replaced by the TGR). Details of these locomotives can be found in the books Too Many Loose Rails and Early steam in Tasmania, both by Brian Chamberlain.
