This list was originally compiled by Michael Dix and Andrew Dix, and published in their 1991 book Locomotives of the Tasmanian Transport Museum. The list has since been updated to take account of changes in the locomotive fleet.
This list includes all classes of diesel locomotive operated by the Tasmanian Government Railways (TGR), Australian National, and/or Tasrail in Tasmania, with the exception of the road / rail Linmac, the current diesel workshops shunter.

From June 1998, all operational Tasrail locomotives were renumbered at a numerical system, with class designation not appearing on the locos.
In May 1998, ATNTasrail purchased the Emu Bay Railway, including its operational fleet of 13 locomotives. The use of these locomotives was restricted to the former Emu Bay Railway yard in Burnie and the Melba line south from Burnie. All these locomotives have since been withdrawn
